Toners have a poor reputation for good reason. For years most were alcohol-based, designed to close pores, which is not something that can actually happen, and they dried out and irritated skin. A well-formulated toner is a different story.
What a good toner does
A modern, well-formulated toner does not dry out skin. It prepares it. It can deliver a first layer of hydration, rebalance pH after cleansing, and in the case of toners with actives, offer gentle exfoliation in a liquid format that is easy to apply across the whole face.
The myth worth retiring
Closing pores is not something any product can do. Pore size is largely genetic, not something that opens and closes with a topical product. A good toner does not change pore size, but it can improve how they look by keeping skin more even and clean.
- Apply after cleansing, before serums
- If it contains exfoliating acids, treat it with the same respect as any other exfoliant: gradual introduction, evening use
- Avoid ones with alcohol among the first few ingredients. Those are the ones that genuinely dry skin out.
The honest conclusion
A toner is not a decorative or outdated step. It is a useful tool when well formulated. The key is choosing one designed to add to your routine rather than work against it.
A toner is under consideration for a future Lumyra Lab expansion.
