Retinol has the best evidence of any over the counter active and the worst reputation for comfort. Both are deserved. The difference is almost entirely in how it is introduced.
Why it is worth the trouble
Retinoids influence how skin cells behave rather than sitting on top of them. Over months that shows up as smoother texture, softer fine lines and more even tone. No other category available without a prescription has the same depth of research behind it.
The catch is that the adjustment period is real. Dryness, flaking and sensitivity in the first few weeks are the normal course, not a sign the product is wrong. What separates people who get results from people who give up is almost always the starting pace.
Three retinoids, not one
06 uses three, and the reason is tolerance rather than strength for its own sake.
- Retinol is the familiar one, converted by the skin into its active form.
- Retinyl palmitate is an ester. It converts more slowly, which spreads the effect out.
- Hydroxypinacolone retinoate binds without needing to convert first.
Retinol sits here at 1%, and spreading the load across three retinoids means the formula does not have to lean on it alone to do its work.
How to start
One night a week, on skin that is completely dry, for the first fortnight. Damp skin increases penetration and increases irritation with it. Add a second night only once the first is uneventful, and keep your moisturiser on those nights rather than skipping it.
What not to combine it with
On a retinol night, use retinol. Not another retinoid, not benzoyl peroxide, and not an AHA or BHA exfoliant, 03 included. Leave a night between the two.
Retinoids also increase sun sensitivity, so daily sunscreen is not optional alongside them.
06 Retinol is not part of the five product kit and carries its own guidance. Its full ingredient list, and the products it should not be combined with, are on its product page.
Retinoids are not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are pregnant, planning to be, or breastfeeding, speak to your physician before using any retinoid.
